Mason sparks Owls in win over GC men
Harford reserve scores 19 points in 19 minutes in 107-91 triumph
Bel Air, MD – Paul Mason came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points – including three layups in a 9-0, first-half run that put the Owls ahead to stay Sunday afternoon – as Harford Community College rolled to a 107-91 men’s basketball victory over visiting Garrett College.
Mason played just 19 minutes, but hit 9-of-12 field-goal attempts as the Owls improved to 16-11 overall and 8-4 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference. He was one of six Owls in double figures.
Laker Gavin Jackson scored a game-high 35 points and Alex Vargo added 19 points, including a free throw that created the game’s final tie at 30-30. Mason then converted three layups and Ty Williams added a 3-pointer in the 9-0 run that put Harford ahead to stay.
The Owls, who had a 55-45 halftime lead, broke the game open with a 12-0 scoring spree to start the second half. Chandler Johnson (15 points) and Jadyn Williams each had 3-pointers as part of the 12-0 run.
Nate Lacey scored 18 points for the Owls. Harford’s Donovan Miller, Jordan Butler, and Ricardo Ross each scored 10 points.
Nate Washington and K’Shawn Scott each scored 12 points for the Lakers (13-12, 3-7).
Frederick 107, Garrett 93
Frederick, MD – Alex Vargo scored a career-high 44 points Saturday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough for the visiting Lakers.
Frederick’s Justin Morrisey scored 36 points and teammate Terrell Neal added 26 for the Cougars, who led wire-to-wire. Malik Witherspoon was the third Frederick player in double figures with 16 points.
Vargo is averaging 25.7 points-per-game for the Lakers on 54 percent field-goal shooting, including 45 percent from the 3-point line. He is averaging 35 points over his last three games.
Garrett 91, Hagerstown 82
McHenry, MD – Alex Vargo scored 42 points, hitting 16-of-29 shots and all six of his free-throw attempts, as the Lakers rallied from a 44-43 halftime deficit last Wednesday to beat Hagerstown.
Gavin Jackson added 21 points and K’Shawn Scott posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Nate Washington chipped in with eight points and a team-high eight assists.
Trent Walker scored a team-high 34 points, Mason Sword added 22, and Hassan Perkins had a double-double (14 points, game-high 12 assists) for Hagerstown.
