Brian Boal, left, presents a gift on behalf of Landon’s Library to Garrett College Foundation Executive Director Cherie Krug. The gift is supplying the I Can Swim! program with new life vests.

Landon’s Library recently gifted two dozen new life vests to the I Can Swim! program, which annually teaches basic swimming and provides water safety instruction to all Garrett County Public Schools kindergarteners.

“We’re so grateful to Landon’s Library for this generous gift,” said Angela Luby, aquatics and group fitness program coordinator for the Community Aquatic & Recreation Complex (CARC). The CARC, operated by Garrett College, oversees the I Can Swim! program.

Luby said a recent review of the ICS! life vest supply indicated they would need to be replaced in the near future. She contacted Cherie Krug, executive director of the Garrett College Foundation, who said she knew who would make an ideal donor.

“Landon’s Library is involved in all kinds of different children’s activities, especially around sports,” said Krug. “It just seemed like a natural fit.”

Krug also noted that Brian and Crystal Boal –Landon’s Library founders who were named 2017 Garrett County Most Beautiful People – were already established I Can Swim! donors through the WGW Golf Tournament.”

Luby said I Can Swim! serves about 250 kindergarteners each year.

“That’s the perfect age for this type of instruction,” said Luby. “They absorb it quickly and it keeps them safe in, on, and around the water.”

I Can Swim! was founded in 2011. It is jointly supported by Garrett College, Garrett County Public Schools, and the Garrett County Commissioners, as well as by a group of regular donors.
