Garrett College's men rout D & E JV
Wilson's 26 points leads six Lakers into double figures
Jhaiden Wilson scored an efficient 26 points on just 14 shots Sunday afternoon as the Garrett College men's basketball team routed the Davis & Elkins College junior varsity, 104-83.
Wilson – one of six Lakers in double figures – made 8-of-14 shots from the field, including 3-of-7 from the 3-point line. He also went 7-for-7 from the foul line while passing out six assists and collecting three steals.
"He's got a lot of ability,” GC head coach Matt McCullough said of Wilson. "When he hits shots, he's a really good player – and you know the effort will always be there.”
Reserves K'Shawn Scott (15 points, nine rebounds), Gavin Jackson (12 points), and Justyn Boyd (11 points) all reached double figures. Starters Antwan Gross (nine rebounds, four assists, four steals) and Nate Washington each added 10 points.
GC reserve David Zwack just missed double figures with eight points while making all three of his shots, including two from beyond the arc. The Lakers' reserves scored 56 of the team's 104 points.
GC (6-7) rolled to a 57-33 halftime advantage to take control of the game.
"I didn't think we played 40 minutes to our capabilities,” said McCullough, whose squad was outscored 50-47 in the second half as the GC coach made liberal use of his bench, "but there were stretches in the game when we saw some improvement in areas we needed to see it.”
Prince George's 86, Garrett 84
Largo, MD – Saveon Jackson scored the game's final seven points Saturday afternoon as the host Owls erased an 84-79 deficit in the final 64 seconds.
"He's only 5-11 or 6 feet, but he's a bulldog,” GC head coach Matt McCullough said of Jackson. "He was able to get into the paint down the stretch and make things happen.”
Jackson, who finished with a team-high 29 points, converted a three-point play with 1:04 remaining to pull the Owls within 84-82. After GC's Jhaiden Wilson (game-high 33 points) missed a jumper, Jackson tied the game with a layup with 44 seconds left.
The Lakers then turned the ball over with 31 seconds remaining, setting the stage for Jackson's game-winning jumper with eight seconds left.
Alex Vargo finished with 18 points, but Vargo and Wilson were the only Lakers to crack double digits.
GC trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, but used a 9-2 run to built a 65-61 lead with 7:42 remaining. The Lakers took their biggest lead thanks to a three-point play by Antwan Gross that made it 74-67 with 4:49 remaining.
Jasir Tremble (24 points) and Isaiah Crockett (11 points) joined Jackson in double figures for PG (8-1 overall, 3-1 league). Jackson made 9-of-14 shots from the field and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line.
"Tremble and Jackson are two of the better guards we've seen this year,” said McCullough. "There's no quit in either of them.”
The Lakers fell to 1-3 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference.
Montgomery 102, GC 91
Rockville, MD – Donovahn Keyes scored a game-high 33 points for the Raptors, who held Garrett to 26 first-half points.
Jayden Rowe (16 points), Jadon Robinson (15 points), and Sebastian Dokum (13 points, game-high 22 rebounds) also reached double digits for Montgomery.
Alex Vargo scored a team-high 30 points and Jhaiden Wilson added 23 for the Lakers. Rob Smith also hit double digits with 11 points.
